The thermo-diffusive model for flame propagation, with high activation
energies and Lewis number close to one is considered. It has been sho
wn by Sivashinsky, by means of formal arguments, that the plane wave s
olutions were stable above a certain critical value of the Lewis numbe
r, and then bifurcated into two-dimensional waves. A rigorous proof of
this fact, as well as the stability of the two-dimensional waves, sti
ll remained open problems; we provide here an answer to these two ques
tions.
