Abstract
The distribution of tanneries, their tanning modes, effluent character istics and their management in various districts in the country with s pecial reference to UP have been described. Salient features of the Up flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor along with various other methods being adopted by tanneries in the country for the treatment of effluents have been discussed.
