Abstract
Astroviruses are associated with gastroenteritis in humans and many di seases in animals. Human astroviruses (HAstVs) cannot be propagated re adily or isolated in conventional cell cultures. The presence of tryps in supports HAstV growth in selected cell cultures such as the continu ous colonic carcinoma cell line (CaCo-2). This study reports on the pr opagation of cell culture adapted reference strains of HAstV, and the direct isolation of HAstV from stool specimens in the human hepatoma c ell line PLC/PRF/5.
