Reaction of the cluster [Ru5C(CO)(15)] 1 with the bidentate nitrogen h
eterocycles 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,2'-bipyridyl (bipy) in th
e presence of 1.1 and 2.2 molar equivalents of Me3NO led to a facile m
etal-metal bond cleavage and a structural change in the cluster to yie
ld the bridged butterfly products [Ru5C(CO)(14)(phen)] and [Ru5C(CO)(1
4)(bipy)] respectively as the major products, and the orthometallated
derivatives [Ru-5(mu-H)C(CO)(13)(C12H7N2)] and [Ru-5(mu-H)C(CO)(13)(C1
0H7N2)] as the minor product as revealed by spectroscopy and X-ray cry
stallography.
