The specific solvent interactions between solute and solvent molecules
are confirmed by studying the splitting of the nu3(F2) band of CBr4 i
n isotropic electron donor solvents. This effect is also observed in t
he nematic and isotropic phases of the liquid crystal ZLI 1167. The ab
ility of CBr4 to form weak donor-acceptor complexes with basic organic
compounds suggests that the IR linear dichroism of CBr4 in an anisotr
opic solvent will mainly be determined by the contribution of these sp
ecific interactions and to a much smaller extent by the local field ef
fects.
