In this paper we present a direct evidence of the influence of hydroge
n atoms on the XANES spectra of transition metal complexes in aqueous
solution. The metal Kedges of Ni2+ and Co2+ are analyzed by multiple s
cattering theory using different clusters around the absorber and diff
erent final state potentials. On this basis the presence of hydrogen a
toms has been found to be necessary to reproduce the width and the rel
ative amplitude ratio of the experimental features.
