J. Vogel et al., STRUCTURE AND MAGNETISM OF PD IN PD FE MULTILAYERS STUDIED BY XMCD ATTHE PD L-2,L-3 EDGES/, Journal de physique. IV, 7(C2), 1997, pp. 401-403
We have measured the L-2,L-3 absorption edges of Pd in Pd/Fe multilaye
rs with different Pd interlayer thicknesses. The spectral features obs
erved after the L-3 and L-2 white lines indicate that in the atomic la
yer adjacent to Fe the Pd atoms have a local structure different from
fee. The hybridization of the Pd 4d states with the Fe 3d band leads t
o a small increase in the number of Pd 4d electrons. X-ray Magnetic Ci
rcular Dichroism (XMCD) measurements show that the Pd atoms directly a
t the interface are strongly polarized with a total moment of 0.38 mu(
B)/atom. The orbital moments are found to be small (0.0-0.04 mu(B)). T
he thickness dependence of the XMCD shows that Pd atoms carry a magnet
ic moment up to 4 layers from the interface.
