The ion desorption by carbon Is electron excitation was studied for th
in films of selectively deuterated polystyrene ([-CD2-CD(C6H5)-](n), [
-CH2-CH(C6D5)-](n), and [-CD2-CD(C6D5)-](n)) using the ion time-of-fli
ght method with monochromatic synchrotron radiation pulses. By compari
ng the photon energy dependence of partial ion yields (PIY's) of D+ of
these polymers, it was found that the observed D+ originates mainly f
rom the pendant phenyl group. Further we found that PIY spectra of Dare useful in discussing the origin of the absorption features by comp
aring with the total electron yield.
