M. Sole et al., THE ROLE OF PH IN THE GLUCOSE EFFECT ON PRODIGIOSIN PRODUCTION BY NONPROLIFERATING CELLS OF SERRATIA-MARCESCENS, Letters in applied microbiology, 25(2), 1997, pp. 81-84
The production of prodigiosin by non-proliferating cells of Serratia m
arcescens is inhibited by addition of glucose or different carbon sour
ces to the induction medium. The induction in acidic external pH, mimi
cking the effects produced by the carbon sources, reduced prodigiosin
synthesis, and the prodigiosin production seems to be related to the l
ength of the low pH period. Buffering at pH 7.5 increased pigment prod
uction in media with repressing carbon sources. This study reveals tha
t the inhibitory effect of carbon sources on prodigiosin production ma
y be due to a lowering of the pH of the medium.
