Abstract
The new compound CrZr0.75Nb0.25F6 has been synthesized. Structural det ermination by the Rietveld full-profile technique has been carried out on powdered samples. This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic s ystem, space group Pnma, with a = 11.5728(4) Angstrom, b = 7.9671(2) A ngstrom, and c = 5.8203(2) Angstrom The structure displays an antiferr odistortive order of elongated CrF6 octahedra induced by a cooperative Jahn-Teller effect. This result is compared with ferrodistortive orde r of CrF6 octahedra in the HT CrNbF6 form. The magnetic behavior of bo th CrNbF6 and CrZr0.75Nb0.25F6 at low temperature is described.
