Abstract
We calculate the distribution function of the degree of polarization o f an initially polarization scrambled signal propagating long distance s in an optical fiber, We show that a significant repolarization can o ccur for modern-day parameters. We estimate how far the polarization d ependent loss must be reduced before repolarization becomes negligible .
