Sleep disorders require careful evaluation, precise diagnosis and a sy
stematic search for a cause before considering treatment. Hypnotics mu
st never be prescribed directly and when necessary ii must be used pre
cautionally. during a short period of time, as little is known on thei
r long term effects in children. In addition some psychotropic drugs m
ay lead to tolerance and addiction. Educational and behavioural therap
y together with sleep hygiene, have proven to be efficient in most sit
uations. Awaking stimulants are indicated in primary hypersomnia.
