The interaction of a planar shock wave with a spherical vortex was num
erically investigated by solving the unsteady Eulerian equations using
the finite difference method. A compressible spherical vortex was con
structed by time-advancing the equations of motion with properly presc
ribed initial conditions. The planar shock wave was set initially at a
position far upstream of the vortex and then moved toward the vortex
with its plane perpendicular to the vortex axis. Different regimes of
the shock-vortex interactions were observed during the time-integratio
n with various ranges of shock Mach number and vortex strength. In par
ticular, the shock-branching and noticeable vortex deformation were ob
served in the cases of strong shock-vortex interactions.
