In the late 60-ties fluid bed drying of sugar made a step from researc
h laboratories into industrial practice. Since then the progress of su
gar fluid bed drying technology has been noticeable, however, the desc
ription of the drying process is still based on questionable models an
d no reliable sugar drying curve is available. This paper presents new
information on the characteristic drying curve of white sugar and a c
omputer simulation model of a fluid bed dryer-cooler for sugar togethe
r with its application for the design of industrial scale dryers-coole
rs The model has been used in the development of a series of fluid bed
dryers-coolers for sugar in Polish sugar industry.
