For 23 lines from ail three fundamental bands of H2S, noble gas broade
ning coefficients were measured applying a two-channel diode laser spe
ctrometer in pulsed mode. Altogether for 17 lines from the nu(1) band
(3 less than or equal to J '' less than or equal to 17, 0 less than or
equal to K-a '' less than or equal to 6), 1 line from the nu(2) band
(J '' = 4, K-a '' = 3), and 5 lines from the nu(3) band (3 less than o
r equal to J '' less than or equal to 7, 1 less than or equal to K-a '
' less than or equal to 7) broadening coefficients gamma(H2S-noble gas
) for collisions with helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon were det
ermined. The broadening coefficients for lines from different bands wi
th similar rotational quantum numbers are comparable. Within the studi
ed quantum number range, as in the case of collisions with H2S and air
, the broadening coefficients show a pronounced J '' dependence but no
K-a '' dependence. The values for gamma(H2S-noble gas) decrease stron
gly with increasing J ''. The largest change is observable for collisi
ons with argon and krypton where a decrease in gamma(H2S-noble gas) fr
om values of about 0.1 to 0.013 cm(-1)/atm occurs. The broadening coef
ficients for collisions with different noble gas perturbers for the ma
jority of lines follow the trends gamma(H2S-He) > gamma(H2S-Ne) < gamm
a(H2S-Ar), gamma(H2S-Ar) < < gamma>(H2S-Kr), and gamma(H2S-Kr) approxi
mate to gamma(H2S-Xe). (C) 1997 Academic Press.
