The oxygen b(1) Sigma(g)(+)-X-3 Sigma(g)(-) electronic spectrum (the a
tmospheric system) has been recorded at high resolution in both emissi
on and absorption on the same Fourier transform spectrometer but with
independent calibration methods used in each case. After correction fo
r the known pressure shift of the transitions, excellent agreement is
achieved between the data sets recorded in this work, allowing signifi
cant errors to be identified within and between previous data sets. Mo
lecular constants appropriate to the low pressure limit are determined
from these new data for this important transition. (C) 1997 Academic
