Abstract
Effects of solvent and base on the reaction of p-cresol with formaldeh yde were studied using a liquid SIMS method. In all cases, complex mix tures of p-methylcalix[n]arenes were obtained and selectivities depend ed on the cation type and solvent used. Two pure products, p-methylcal ix [7]arene and p-methylcalix [8]arene, were isolated.
