M. Aysan et al., INDUSTRIAL DECENTRALIZATION IN ISTANBUL AND ITS IMPACT ON TRANSPORT, Journal of urban planning and development, 123(3), 1997, pp. 40-58
The general tendency in a number of metropolitan cities of the world w
here metropolitan area problems have been considerably alleviated is t
oward making the urban macro form into a multicore structure and decen
tralizing industry on regional or national basis. The aim of this stud
y was to examine decentralization policies to be implemented in Istanb
ul and to consider the impact of the multicore urban model on urban tr
ansportation. In the first section of this paper, areas in Istanbul wi
th potential for further development are determined using the dynamic
Lowry model. In the second section, scenarios regarding the decentrali
zation of industry are generated based on the results obtained from th
e first. In the third section, the traffic-flow results of the current
situation and scenarios over the current transportation system are ob
tained. The conclusion reached is that the decentralization of industr
y in Istanbul and transforming the city into a linear and multicore st
ructure do have positive impacts on various aspects of the urban trans
portation system.
