The interaction of emission from a cosmological gamma-ray burst with t
he interstellar medium surrounding the parent galaxy is investigated.
It is shown that, irrespective of the particular model used to account
for the formation of cosmological gamma-ray bursts, the brightest bur
sts should have counterparts at visual and ultraviolet wavelengths. Th
e light curves of such counterparts are calculated for bursts with ene
rgies of 10(51) and 10(52) erg in interstellar media with various dens
ities.
