A direct calculation is presented of the electronic Raman scattering i
ntensities between the crystal field states of the lower multiplet ter
ms of Pr3+ in Cs2NaPrCl6. The crystal field states of the intermediate
configuration, restricted to 4f(1)5d(1), were employed. The agreement
with the alternative calculation using Judd-Ofelt-Axe theory is good,
but some discrepancies with experimental results occur for both calcu
lations. The direct calculation provides an insight into the transitio
n intensity mechanism. The effects on the transition intensities of ch
anging the energies of intermediate states are reported. (C) 1997 Else
