The author gives an introduction into the theory of psychoanalytic tec
hnique on the basis of contemporary pest-Kleinian concepts. He focusse
s on the clinical problems which are linked to the distinction between
thick-skinned and thin-skinned narcissistic patients, representing tw
o different kinds of the relationship between the subjective self and
a third object within the internal oedipal situation. He illuminates t
he special dynamics of transference and countertransference in the ana
lysis of these patients which is dominated by the need for agreement a
nd the expectation of understanding as bipolar dynamic contrasts.
