The results of the Consumer Reports mental health survey are reviewed
and discussed. It turned that long term psychotherapy was associated w
ith greater improvement than short term psychotherapy. Outcomes were l
ower when the choice of therapist and duration of therapy were limited
by health insurance. No specific modality of psychotherapy did better
than any other. The above mentioned study lead to a methodological di
scussion being summarised and assessed. Finally there are some conclus
ions regarding psychotherapy research and health care policy introduce
d.
