The case of a newborn presenting a tail-like lumbosacral cutaneous app
endage is reported This appendage was not associated with other malfor
mations. Spinal lesions were ruled out and then its surgical excision
was performed. The clinical and histological features of this malforma
tion define it as a so called ''true tail''. The etiology of this find
ing remains disputed and generic causes, exogenous agents or the amnio
tic band syndrome may be possible.
