The problems associated with domain configuration for an AI task plann
er are discussed in the context of current Knowledge Based System (KBS
) research and practical experience in the design and development of a
pplication domains. The domain knowledge required to configure a non-l
inear hierarchical planner is partitioned into functional areas and th
e issues prevalent in each area are presented with examples drawn from
a simplified bridge building domain and a satellite repair domain. Ot
her relevant work in planning design guidelines, ontologies and method
ologies is also discussed.
