The compound di-n-butylbis(2,4-dihydroxybenzoato)tin(IV), (C4H9)(2)Sn[
2,4-(OH)(2)C6H3COO](2) has been synthesized and characterized by eleme
ntal analysis, IR and NMR (H-1, C-13 and Sn-119) spectroscopy and X-ra
y diffraction techniques. The compound is monomeric with the Sn atom e
xisting in a skew-trapezoidal bipyramidal geometry, in which the asymm
etrically chelating carboxylate ligands comprise the trapezoidal plane
and the butyl groups occupy the axial positions with the C-Sn-C angle
139.0(3)degrees. Both of the oxygen atoms from the hydroxy groups res
iding on the ligand do not participate in bonding to the tin atom. How
ever, in the crystal lattice, there are intermolecular hydrogen bonds
of OH...O' type which bond the related molecules together. (C) 1997 El
