The author describes the principal diseases of animals occurring in su
b-Saharan Africa, and the traditional procedures used to prevent and t
reat these diseases, particularly those employed by Fulani shepherds.
First, consideration is given to the diseases of infectious, traumatic
or nutritional origin which may affect various species of animals. Ne
xt, accounts are presented of diseases principally affecting young and
adult cattle, small ruminants and other domestic animals (horses, dro
medaries, poultry, etc.). Finally, a general review is given of the tr
aditional pharmacopoeia of the Fulani people, summarising their knowle
dge of toxic and medicinal plants.
