We report a new cardiology patient simulator developed through the app
lication of new digital computer technology, capable of playing back s
elected physical findings (jugular-venous waves, arterial pulses of ca
rotid, brachial, radial and femoral arteries, and cardiac impulses), a
s well as cardiac sounds, murmurs and respiratory sounds that have bee
n prerecorded from actual patients. The examining physician uses an or
dinary type of stethoscope. Four built-in speakers are located in the
human-sized mannequin at the classic auscultatory sites (aortic, pulmo
nic, tricuspid and mitral). This compact and portable educational appa
ratus should facilitate medical training in the bedside cardiac examin
ation, of physicians, medical students, nurses and paramedics througho
ut the world.
