Yi. Tarasevich et al., PREPARATION AND PROPERTIES OF CARBON-MINERAL SORBENTS, Colloid journal of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 57(2), 1995, pp. 222-227
An efficient mesoporous carbon-mineral sorbent (CMS) that combines use
ful properties of a mineral matrix and activated carbon is prepared on
the basis of waste products. Carbon is placed on the surface of meso-
and macropores of the mineral matrix in the form of clusters with lin
ear sizes in the range 5 - 9 nm, covering 60% of the initial surface o
f the mineral. Carbon clusters block active sites of the mineral matri
x, and the resulting acidity of CMS is essentially determined by its c
arbon component. The adsorption ability of CMS is determined both by i
ts acid-base parameters and by its ability to adsorb molecules of orga
nic substances, with the redistribution of the electronic density betw
een the adsorbent and molecules of adsorbate leading to the formation
of chemical bonds.
