Abstract
Schiff in 1960 and many others since then have used ''space-dragging'' Machian explanations for such general-relativistic phenomena as the L ense-Thirring precession of gyroscopes in the space outside massive ro tating objects. But an examination of what the dragging patterns could be, shows these explanations to be unsatisfactory. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
