Japan retains its position as one of the world's major distant water f ishing nations. This article analyzes Japan's distant water tuna fishe ries, which are currently facing significant external and internal con straints on operation of their vessels. It examines multipronged strat egies that the industry and the government have adopted to ensure surv ival of Japan's tuna operations-the last important distant water fishe ry that remains for Japan's fishing industry.
