Knowing that I was laboring over ''the words'' for some new note cards
for Window on Nursing, a small company in which I am heavily invested
, a friend passed along an article from the Washington Times that he t
hought would interest me. It was titled ''Nourishing Creativity'' and
described the strategies used by two major greeting card companies, Ha
llmark and American Greetings, to keep their artists and writers happy
and creative. Freedom to stare out the window watch television, flip
through magazines, exercise during working hours, go on. retreats to a
nearby farm-even company-sponsored trips overseas to soak up atmosphe
re and culture-are some of them. But what really caught my attention w
ere the regular three-month sabbaticals awarded to long-term employees
to clear their heads and allow the sap of creativity to begin to flow
freely again. During their sabbatical, employees apparently have the
freedom to do whatever they want to restore their creative spirit.
