Abstract
The effect of specimen size on fracture toughness of a pipe-grade high density polyethylene has been examined using the J integral approach. It was found that the size requirements set up by common standards ap pear inadequate for this material. Measurements at low temperatures, a t which a plane strain fracture toughness value could be obtained, tur ned out to be very effective in establishing a more appropriate size r equirement for this material.
