R. Frassine et al., SIZE EFFECTS IN THE FRACTURE OF A PIPE-GRADE HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE, Fatigue & fracture of engineering materials & structures, 20(8), 1997, pp. 1217-1223
The effect of specimen size on fracture toughness of a pipe-grade high
density polyethylene has been examined using the J integral approach.
It was found that the size requirements set up by common standards ap
pear inadequate for this material. Measurements at low temperatures, a
t which a plane strain fracture toughness value could be obtained, tur
ned out to be very effective in establishing a more appropriate size r
equirement for this material.
