K. Wide et al., REPORT ON RESULTS OF FRONTAL-SINUS OBLITERATIONS IN TURKU-UNIVERSITY-CENTRAL-HOSPITAL 1977-1994, Acta oto-laryngologica, 1997, pp. 184-186
When a sinusitis develops into a chronic stage, for which endoscopic s
inus surgery is not radical or succesfull enough, we currently perform
in our hospital obliteration of the infected frontal sinuses. The pre
sent study is a partly retrospective and partly prospective evaluation
of the outcome of patients operated on by osteoplastic approach. Obli
teration materials used during years 1977-1994 have been ossar, collag
en matrix and since 1990 bioactive glass. Although major differences b
etween the obliteration materials could not be demonstrated the oblite
ration with bioactive glass has proven to be a safe and effective meth
od for patients who did not show any improvement after endoscopic sinu
s surgery.
