K. Born et H. Flohn, THE DETECTION OF CHANGES IN BAROCLINICITY AND SYNOPTIC ACTIVITY ON THE NORTHERN-HEMISPHERE FOR THE PERIOD 1967-94 USING 2 DATA SETS, Meteorologische Zeitschrift, 6(2), 1997, pp. 51-59
0Intensified deep cyclones over the North Atlantic especially at the b
eginning of the 1990s - led to the supposition, that the meridional te
mperature gradient of the troposphere could have been strengthened wit
hin the last decades. In this study northern hemispheric tropospheric
temperatures and synoptic activity - in terms of baroclinicity and the
interdiurnal variability of geopotential heights (IDV) - in the perio
d 1967-94 are examined. It has been found that the lower tropospheric
temperature gradients as well as the synoptic activity increased in th
at period especially in the cyclogenetic centres over Newfoundland and
over the Northwest Pacific, leading to an enforcing of meridional hea
t exchange processes due to synoptic eddies. This result could be foun
d with two independent data sets: with analysis data of the German Wea
ther Service (DWD) and with the Comprehensive Ocean-Atmospheric Data S
et (GOADS). The close connection between the solenoidal term and the s
ynoptic activity, represented by the IDV, can be presented as another
instructive result of the study.
