An experiment was carried out during the rainy (kharif) season of 1990
-91 at Agricultural Research Farm, Ambikapur, to study the productivit
y of pigeonpea [Cajanus cafan (L.) Millsp.]-based cropping system in n
orthern hills zone of Chhaltisgarh. Pigeonpea + groundnut (Arachis hyp
ogaea L.) intercropping in 1 : 1 row ratio gave maximum pigeonpea-equi
valent yield (2,070 kg/ha) land-equivalent ratio (1.47), net income (R
s 13,688) and benefit : cost ratio (4.1). Pigeonpea + soybean [Glycine
max (1,.) Merr.] could not prove better than sole pigeonpea, whereas
pigeonpea + groundnut in all row ratios (1 : 1, 2 : 2 and 2 : 4) arran
gement proved superior to sole groundnut and pigeonpea cropping system
