Abstract
In this paper, we consider the inverse backscattering problem for the acoustic equation. The problem is to determine the sound speed of a me dium by measuring the response to sound waves in the backscattering di rection, i.e., by measuring the echoes. We prove that one can uniquely identify the sound speed from this information if it is a priori clos e to the constant sound speed.
