A novel chemiluminescence (CL) detection scheme for capillary electrop
horesis (CE) has been developed based on the Ru(bpy)(3)(3+) CL reactio
n. Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) is incorporated into the CE electrolyte and an elect
rode inserted into the outlet end of the capillary electrochemically o
xidizes the Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) into the active Ru(bpy)(3)(3+) form, which
then reacts with analytes at the end of the CE column and produces lig
ht. The performance of the system is characterized for a series of bet
a-blockers, with an LOD for oxprenolol of 0.6 mu g mL(-1) and a separa
tion efficiency of 15000.
