Abstract
Reaction of methyl isothiocyanate with two equivalents of lithium diis opropylamide, followed by alkylation with dimethyl sulfate gives 2-met hyl-5-N, N-dimethylaminothiazole in a high yield. The isomer, 1-methyl -2,5-bis(methylthio)imidazole is obtained in a high yield, if prior to methylation, the reaction mixture is stirred for some period with wat er at room temperature.
