Jh. Klotz et al., EVIDENCE LACKING FOR MAGNETIC COMPASS ORIENTATION IN FIRE ANTS (HYMENOPTERA, FORMICIDAE), Journal of the Kansas Entomological Society, 70(1), 1997, pp. 64-65
The conclusion by Anderson and Vander Meer (1993) that the red importe
d fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren) has magnetic orientation is unac
ceptable for two, jointly compelling reasons: (1) We could not replica
te their experimental results, and (2) Anderson and Vander Meer's argu
ment, that a magnetic field induced change in the latency to trail for
mation is evidence for magnetic orientation, is logically flawed.
