We report a direct measurement of the hyperfine splitting of the 5S(1/
2) state in Sodium atoms using a sample of cold atoms held in a magnet
o-optical trap. The splitting determination can be made through the de
crease of the trapped atoms fluorescence when an extra channel for tra
p loss is created by single-photon ionizations of the 5S state. We obt
ained Delta v(HFS)(5S(1/2)) = 156.7 +/- 0.9 MHz. Comparison of this me
asurement with available results is presented.
