The solubilization of flurbiprofen (1), a drug practically insoluble i
n water, using various physiologically active hydrotropic agents has b
een investigated, In order to gain insight into the probable mechanism
of solubilization solubility, spectral, typical properties of hydrotr
opes, solution properties, gel formation, and paste formation were stu
died with structural variation in the hydrotropes. The results indicat
e that the enhanced solubility of 1 in the presence of hydrotropes at
lower hydrotrope concentrations is due to a weak ionic interaction and
at higher concentration, the formation of molecular aggregates seems
to be a possible mechanism for hydrotropic solubilization.
