T. Nagai et al., POLAR STRATOSPHERIC CLOUDS OBSERVED AT EUREKA (80-DEGREES-N, 86-DEGREES-W) IN THE CANADIAN ARCTIC DURING THE 1994 1995 WINTER/, Geophysical research letters, 24(17), 1997, pp. 2243-2246
A lidar system was installed at Eureka (80 degrees N, 86 degrees W) in
January 1993 to monitor stratospheric aerosols and polar stratospheri
c clouds(PSCs). In the winter of 1994/1995, PSCs were found at altitud
es of around 20km in the middle of December. In early January 1995, PS
Cs were observed at altitudes from 14.3km to 16km, where the temperatu
re ranged from 199K to 202K. Since this range is higher than the frost
point of nitric acid trihydrate (NAT), the particles in these PSCs ma
y have consisted of sulfuric acid tetrahydrate (SAT).
