This study shows that it is possible to carry out the grinding of roll
ing rolls in such a way that the surface layer gets superior service p
roperties. A thermal calculation is used to relate the temperature dis
tribution in the work piece to the grinding conditions. The microstruc
tures resulting from such thermal cycles have been studied in the case
of an 83CrMoV9 steel and the microhardness gradients determined. The
final properties of the surface layer are influenced by the whole hist
ory of grinding and not only the last pass.
