Adults with and without disabilities were surveyed to investigate simi
larities and differences between these groups on dimensions of quality
of life. Differences were found in marital status and opportunities t
o make choices, as well as in the extent of social networks and activi
ties experienced by these two groups. The authors contend that quality
of life is a socially constructed phenomenon that must be addressed b
y increasing opportunities for self-determination in terms of both ski
ll development and environmental supports.
