Abstract
This paper presents an improved genetic algorithm (IGA) to solve optim al reactive power dispatch (ORPD). The parameters of GA, mutation prob ability, crossover and coding technique, are improved to make GA a pra ctical algorithm in the optimization of real-life large scale systems. The results of ORPD by IGA are compared with the results obtained usi ng a conventional gradient-based optimization method. The comparison s hows that improved GA is better than the conventional method in solvin g ORPD problem.
