Abstract
A conceptual framework for evaluating sustainable agroecosystems based on economic theory is presented. Agroecosystem sustainability embrace s human socioeconomic and bioecological aspects. There are tradeoffs, complementarities, and interrelationships among alternative choices th at have to be made in a world of resource scarcity in order to achieve a sustainable agroecosystem. Analyzing these choices in an integrated framework is a central component of modern economic analysis. (C) 199 7 Elsevier Science Ltd.
