The dynamics of a low molecular mass ferroelectric liquid crystal that
can be frozen into a glassy state has been studied by means of broadb
and dielectric spectroscopy covering a wide time scale range from 10(-
10) to 10 s. Both the optically active compound and the racemic mixtur
e have been studied. The temperature dependence of the relaxation freq
uency of the Goldstone mode, related to azimuthal fluctuations of the
director, follows the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann law. The frequencies of th
e modes associated with the overall motions of the molecules also show
this behaviour. A high frequency Arrhenius-like mechanism was also ob
served.
