The defects in gamma-irradiated silica glass were investigated using t
he pulsed ESR technique. By exciting the spin packets both selectively
and nonselectively, it was found that spin relaxation was induced mai
nly by the dipole-dipole interaction between electron spins of the ide
ntical species. By analyzing the dipole-dipole interaction between ele
ctron spins, the flip-flop phenomenon between them was found to be the
main cause of electron spin relaxation.
