After the constitution of the ''New Lander'' in the former GDR in the
state of Brandenburg no air quality data from the beginning of systema
tic monitoring were available. As a consequence of new orientation or
disbandment of supervising institutions a loss of the regionally colle
cted data had to be feared. Therefore a program for the systematic reg
istration and evaluation of all available data according to the regula
tions actually in force in the FRG was realised in the Brandenburg Sta
te Office for Environment. Subject matter of this paper is a general r
eview of the development of air pollution concentration levels in the
state of Brandenburg since 1975 and a short outlook to the end of the
decennium. The closing remarks deal with the rapid improvements of the
air quality situation since 1990.
