The hydrostatic extrusion of polyethylene filled with hydroxyapatite h
as been studied. It is shown that the extrusion behavior is qualitativ
ely similar to that of unfilled polymer. Extruded products with flexur
al moduli of at least 10 GPa and flexural strengths of 90 MPa have bee
n produced, which can be considered as candidates for load-bearing bon
e substitute materials. (C) 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
